Two days ago I met a young couple from Cour d’alene, Idaho, who told me of this experience. They had driven their car several hours from their home to Sandpoint, Idaho to catch an AMTRAK train to the Twin Cities for Thanksgiving with their families. They had made their train reservation on line and their tickets were mailed to their house. The train was due in Sandpoint, Idaho,  at 2:32am. They had never taken the train before and anxiously looked forward to the adventure.

Hace dos días conocí a una pareja muy joven de Cour d’alene, Idaho, y me contaron esta experiencia. Manejaron su automóvil por unas cuantas horas desde su casa en Sandpoint, Idaho para poder abordar un tren de AMTRAK y viajar hacia Twin Cities para pasar el día de Acción de Gracias con sus famitas. Las reservaciones las habían hecho por computadora y los boletos se los enviaron a casa por correo. El tren debía llegar a la estación de Sandpoint, Idaho a las 2:32 de la mañana. Nunca habían viajado en tren y con ansiedad esperaban esta aventura.

Me tomó un poco de tiempo el descifrar como subir fotos pero con un poco de ayuda del webmaster, aquí esta la fotografía la cual fue sacada el último martes en el Centro de Bethany durante el almuerzo para los sacerdotes retirados.

Another nice thing which happens at this time every year is an annual celebration of the Eucharist and luncheon for retired priests in the Diocese. It is something started at least nine years ago and it takes place on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We have long been blessed as a local Church by the presence of retired priests from many dioceses and religious communities throughout the US and Canada. The weather has a lot to do with enticing men who have sometimes already completed forty, fifty and sixty years of priestly ministry, usually up north, to come south for their retirement years. What is so edifying is that almost all wish to continue in priestly ministry (while few understandably want anything to do with administration). So they have been and are a wonderful help at many of our parishes and as the number of our own active priests declines, our own men depend on them.

Otro evento del cual participo y es muy lindo es la celebración anual de la Eucaristía y el almuerzo que le sigue para los sacerdotes retirados en nuestra diócesis. Comenzó hace nueve años y se celebra siempre el día martes antes del Día de Acción de Gracias (Thanksgiving). Por mucho tiempo hemos sido bendecidos en esta iglesia local con la presencia de sacerdote retirados de muchas otras diócesis y ordenes religiosas de los Estados Unidos y Canadá.  Los sacerdotes que ya han cumplido, cuarenta, cincuenta y sesenta años de ministerio sacerdotal, generalmente originarios del norte, vienen hacia el sur para sus años de retiro, el clima tiene mucho que ver con esto. Lo que me inspira es que casi todos quieren continuar con su ministerio sacerdotal (aunque pocos de ellos quieren estar envuelton en administración, lo que se entiende perfectamente). Han sido y son una gran ayuda para muchas de nuestras iglesias y mientras que el número de sacerdotes activos declina, nuestros sacerdotes dependen de ellos.

All right, so its not exactly an original idea but I always learned that “imitation is the highest form of flattery” so I hope David Letterman does not take offense. With this special holiday approaching I was thinking of the top ten things for which I should be most thankful this Thanksgiving. And here they are but NOT in the order of importance or priority in my life – some things need to be more closely held, after all.

Bueno, no es una idea original pero aprendí que “imitar es la mejor forma de alagar” asi que espero que David Letterman no se ofenda. Con esta fiesta tan especial que se acerca pensé en las diez primeras cosas por las que daré gracias en este Día de Acción de Gracias. Y aquí están pero NO en orden de importancia o prioridad en mi vida – después de todo, algunas cosas se deben tener reservadas. (more…)

On Sunday morning I joined a full church at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in South Tampa in thanking Almighty God for their fifty years as a parish faith community. Begun in 1958, St. Patrick’s along with Christ the King have been the only two parishes on the South Tampa peninsula (not counting Our Lady of the Bay which is located at McDill Air Force Base and comes under the Archdiocese of the Military Services). Begun by Father David Cronin who served as first pastor for less than a year, the real “founder” is our own Monsignor John Scully who was able not only to be present but to concelebrate the Mass with us. After a series of diocesan pastors, the parish was placed in the hands of the Franciscan Fathers, Third Order Regular who continue to provide the priestly presence. It was a great day for Father Angelus Migliore, OFM, TOR and his brothers and they were and should be very proud.

El domingo por la mañana me uní a la Iglesia de San Patricio en el Sur de Tampa para darle gracias a Dios Todopoderoso por los cincuenta años que celebraban como comunidad de fe. Esta parroquia comenzó en 1958, la Iglesia de San Patricio junto con la Iglesia de Cristo Rey han sido las únicas dos parroquia en el sur de la península de Tampa (no contando Nuestra Señora de la Bahía la cual se encuentra en la Base Aérea McDill, esta Iglesia se encuentra bajo la Arquidiócesis de los Servicios Militares). El Padre David Cronin comenzó esta parroquia, el sirvió como primer párroco por menos de un ano, pero el verdadero “fundador” fue nuestro Monseñor John Scully el cual pudo no solo estar con nosotros presente hoy pero también concelebrar esta Misa. Después de una serie de párrocos diocesanos, la parroquia fue puesta en las manos de los padres Franciscanos, de Tercer Orden Regular, los que continúan ofreciendo su presencia sacerdotal. Fue un gran día para el padre Angelus Migliore, OFM, TOR y sus hermanos, todos estaban y deben de estar muy orgullosos. (more…)

There are many occasions in the life of a bishop which bring great happiness and I can not and will not offer a “litany” of those occasions today or give a taxative list. Obviously ordinations, the Rite of Election, the Chrism Mass rank right up there. In this diocese, however, today was one of those better moments when at St. Jude’s Cathedral I conferred the St. Jude the Apostle Award on 76 great people of this diocese.  (more…)
